Itinerary

Just an hour and a half north of Quito lies the picturesque volcanic highlands, where you can immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of the indigenous people, explore historic haciendas, and marvel at the majestic volcanoes that dominate the landscape.

In the way to Otavalo, our first stop will be Quitsato, a unique archaeological and astronomical site. It’s known for its sundial, which is one of the most accurate in the world due to its location on the equator. Visiting Quitsato can be a fascinating experience for those interested in astronomy, ancient cultures, and natural wonders.

Then, continue to the renowned Otavalo Indian craft market, where you can browse and purchase unique handcrafted products like textiles, ceramics, tapestries, and jewelry that have been sold for thousands of years.

Our tour will also take you to Peguche, a charming Indian village known for its talented artisans who create beautiful crafts from sheep and llama wool. You’ll have the opportunity to visit a musical workshop, where they create traditional Andean instruments from bamboo and perform enchanting music.

Transfer to Tunas y Cabras. Accommodation in one deluxe room for 2 nights. Enjoy dinner at the hacienda, followed by an optional campfire or relaxation under the stars.

After breakfast, we set off north toward Carchi Province, arriving at Polylepis Lodge, nestled in the heart of the Andean páramo and surrounded by the enchanting Polylepis Forest. Upon arrival, enjoy a refreshing welcome drink, such as herbal tea made from local plants, which helps you acclimate to the high altitude.

Embark on a guided hike through the remarkable Polylepis Forest, home to one of the world’s highest-growing tree species. Along the trail, discover the unique flora and fauna of the area, including sightings of highland birds like the majestic Andean condor or hummingbirds. The guide will explain the ecological importance of these ancient trees and their ability to thrive in such harsh environments, while also sharing information about ongoing conservation efforts to protect this delicate ecosystem.

After the hike, return to the lodge for a traditional Ecuadorian lunch crafted with fresh, local ingredients. The menu combines authentic Andean recipes with seasonal farm-to-table produce, providing a delicious and wholesome dining experience.

In the afternoon, transfer back to Tunas y Cabras. After dinner, cap off the day with a torch-lit night walk, where you’ll immerse yourself in the folklore of the highlands, hearing traditional fairy tales that have been passed down through generations.
